Deerhound Club Breed Show 2019 Critique - Bitches

I would like to extend thanks to the committee for their kind invitation to judge this years breed show, and express thanks to the exhibitors for giving me the honour of a fabulous entry. I know a few were unable to attended, due to ill health, family commitments, and even puppies due!

Many thanks to our stewards and to Chris Arthur making sure no one missed their class. Not forgetting Glenis Peach and her team marking up the catalogues.

I was spoilt for choice in most of the classes and felt the quality was excellent. We had a good sized ring with a slight slope which handlers and dogs coped with. The weather could have been a little kinder to us but at least we were outside on the grass. I did notice a few hounds with teeth that needed a little attention, and some hounds were a little too thin for my taste. But generally I found type, confirmation and balance in most of the hounds. In my final line up I had three bitches giving me the task of deciding who should be left out of the top honours.

PUPPY BITCH 5- 3

A lovely class with three promising litter sisters at slightly different stages.

1 M & G Peach Kilbourne Etoile. The star in this class. Excellent head and expression Strong neck into well place shoulder and return of upper arm. Held her topline and using her well made hind quarters on the move.

2 C Havercroft Kilbourne Vega at Dragonsisle. Not as well developed as 1st place. Head a little strong her ears not yet folded maybe due to her teething.

3 G & M Peach Kilbourne Lili Bora. I did like her. Sadly playing up today, but she is a puppy! Most of the comments of 1st place Apply. One to watch.

JUNIOR BITCH 6-2

1 A & S Phillips Kilbourne Iconix of Ladygrove. Just out of puppy, again playing up a little, very shapley, she is balanced front and rear. Liked her movement

2 A Morgan Stableview Sunday Silence. Much ranger bitch. Not the angulation of 1st . Neat feet and a long tail, the lower end of which has a mind of its own.

YEARLING BITCH 8-3

1S Helps Beardswood Unique Gem. A gem indeed. Tall dark bitch, a good head with a far away expression. A well muscled neck flowing into a good topline. Strong loin and well placed croup. Good muscling to the hind quarters. Covered the ground on the move.

2 E Barter Serenity in the Silence of Ehlaraldawn. Another well made dark bitch. She is just a shade longer in both rib cage and loin, therefore slightly unbalanced in her leg length to body length ratio. Again moved well.

3 Wilce Quinton & Quinton Kilbourne Louise Chick at Kirjojax. Different type to the first two. Stronger in head. Pleasing body. Covering the ground standing and on the move, but not the positive movement of the first two.

SPECIAL BEGINNERS NOVICE BITCH 4-2

1 S Wheeler Meneghy's Star A six year old bitch not to happy on the move but kept her topline. A little long in loin.

2 S Nuttall Ardenish Passion. Smaller built bitch, For me need's a little more weight. Nice wide hind movement when viewed going away.

SPECIAL BEGINNERS OPEN 7-2

1 A Ashton Ardlancien Eiryn to Balgaled. Very pretty head and expression. Strong well made front. Good depth to chest. Nice bend to stifle joint. Held her topline on the move going around the ring.

2 S Nuttall Luckhurst Pani Smaller more compact bitch. Sweet head and expression with small high set ears. Moved well.

UNDERGRADUATE BITCH 9 -1

In the first two places two different but very classy bitches.

1 S Taylor Ormanstar Fast Cat Betty. Classy bitch that stood out in this class. Dark harsh coat. Good shoulder into well placed upper arm, deep chest and strong loin. Would like a little more body length. She strode out well. Lovely mover. One I kept returning to in the challenge.

2 Finnett & Heathcotes Hyndsight How you remind me. Quality, Stronger well made bitch. You know when you put your hands on her withers she has one the best shoulders and return of upper arm of the day. Deep well made rib cage into strong muscled loin. Strong well made quarters. Not as happy on the move as 1st place .

3 J & L Faircloth Chuilinn Lyriel at Calbraidh. Pleasing Head and expression. Neat and well set ears, not the body of the first two but another one that enjoyed moving.

POST GRADUATE. 13-5

1 S Phillips Charbonnel Greta at Ladygrove. She stood out and surprised me when I went over her! At the smaller end of the size scale. Loved her head and expression, neat ears. Correct shoulder and return of upper arm. Plenty of depth, strong well held loin with muscle, well bent at the stifle joint. Her movement is without exaggeration, She flowed around the ring at one with her owner. Pushed hard in the challenge. Res Best bitch.

2 K Constantine Kaleginy Antheia. Differnet type, a taller all round bitch, stronger made, not quite the leg length to height and depth I was looking for. She Moved out well

3 E Barter Kilbourne Saffron at Ehlaraldawn. Dark bitch, pleasing head and body, another nice mover.

LIMIT BITCH 13-5

1 Finnett & Heathcotes Hyndsight Careless Whisper. Lovely balanced bitch. Expressive eye. Well folded neat ears. A strong neck into well placed shoulders with correct return and length of upper arm. Good depth to her rib cage, giving a good tuck up. Strong well muscled loin. Length to the long bones of the rear legs giving a nice bend to stifle joint. Strode out.

2 V Lucas & C Dargonne Packway Little Loxley. Smaller more compact bitch, who has come on a lot since I last judged her. Good front and rear, happy mover going around the ring.

3 N & G Baily' s Greyflax Ruby Tuesday. Taller paler bitch. Lovely head. Front construction not quite as good as the first two. At times on the stand she seemed to lose her topline but held it on the move and she did really stride out positively around the ring.

OPEN BITCH 14- 7

This class had some real quality champion bitches, unlucky to come up against each other today.

1 Finnett & Heathcotes Ch Hynsight in your Dreams. More my type of head and expression. Neat ears. A strong muscled neck into well placed shoulders with good return and length to upper arm. Good length and bone to forearm. Depth to rib cage allowing heart and lung room, good tuck up. Strong well held loin good length from hip to hock, giving a nice bend at the stifle joint. Liked her long low unexaggerated movement. Best Bitch. Pleased the referee awarded her Best in show.

2 S Phillips Ch Charbonnel Gobi to Ladygrove. A paler bitch in full coat flowing as she moved around the ring at ease with her owner, a picture. Litter sister to 1st Post grad. Similar comments apply. I would like a little more of her, however, that would change her overall balance.

3 Morton, Morgan and Constantine Ch Cotherstone Islay List of Kaleginy. Stronger more compact made girl with good depth and confirmation. A lovely Deerhound head. Another good mover.

VETERAN 8- 3

What a class of senior ladies full of quality and type that would give some of the younger bitches here today a run for their money. Thank you for giving them an outing.

1 S Helps Ch Beardswood Quintessence. Tall well made bitch of eight. Pleasing head and expession. Balance to front and rear, good depth. Lovely mover holding her topline on the move. Best Veteran in show.

2 K Constantine Ch Gentiehun Adelaide of Kaleginy. A stockier type of bitch not quite the balanced ratios that one has. Moved well.

3 K Barratts Ch Stranwith Ariadne. I still love her Deerhound head not seen very often now. At nine years old her facial coat has lightened and this in turn really show's off her dark eyes. Small neat ears. Shown in full harsh coat. Such a balanced quality girl. Sadly today her movement was not as positive as the two younger bitches placed above her. I was pleased to see her come into the ring, a real treat to go over her again.
